Laboratory Technician ORIGINS Project
The appointed ORIGINS Laboratory Technician will initially be working at ECU in Joondalup until October 2018. From October 2018 the position will be based at Telethon Kids Institute's the new state of the art facilities within the newly opened Perth Children's Hospital in Nedlands.
The Laboratory Technician will use sterile laboratory techniques to process and cryo preserve samples (mainly cord bloods and placental tissues) as well as enter sample data obtained from ORIGINS participants. The role is responsible for maintaining a clean laboratory as well as appropriate consumable levels through ongoing stocktake and purchasing. The technician will also attend meetings and take minutes as required.
The biobanking process utilises barcoded storage vessels and the processing and cataloguing workflow requires strong attention to detail, meticulous record keeping and reporting of any protocol deviations. As sample/data volumes are expected to increase, and multi-tasking is required, excellent time management skills and a methodical approach is necessary to manage workloads.
The Laboratory Technician will be part of a large multidisciplinary team of nurses, doctors, scientists, midwifes and biobanking and laboratory staff and good interpersonal skills as well good verbal and written communication skills are a must. Additionally a positive and enthusiastic attitude will be very highly regarded.
Essentials requirements for the role:
- A health related University degree
- Laboratory experience with sterile technique and processing of cells and tissues
- Demonstrated attention to detail and time management skills
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
- Willingness to work flexible hours
- Positive and enthusiastic attitude
Desirable:
- Experience in clinical trial related environments
- Demonstrated experience in a working research related environment
- Previous biobanking experience
- Previous experience with barcoded systems
As samples may arrive out of hours, some flexibility with hours between 7am-8pm on weekdays is expected. Weekend work is not expected.
This is a Full time position/Fixed term for 12 months. The successful candidate will need to provide a Working With Childrens Check and current National Police Check before commencement.
