Logistics and transport company Centurion’s commitment to the community was again on full display when they visited Telethon Kids to hand over a cheque recently.
Representatives from Centurion were accompanied by students from their vacation program, who, through a series of fundraising activities, raised $5120 for the Institute.
Activities included a sausage sizzle, swear jar, silent auction, beard shave fundraiser for Chief Executive Officer, Justin Cardaci, and head shave fundraisers for Chief Financial Officer, Grant Gardner, and General Manager of Finance, Gareth Parry, with every dollar raised from these initiatives matched by Centurion.
During the Institute visit, the students toured the labs and offices and caught up with researcher Aarti Saiganesh, from the Strep A team, who showed them flesh-eating bacteria.
They also got a sneak peak of Telethon Kids’ new Discovery Centre and spoke with researcher Kristen White about Telethon Kids Kimberley, a permanent base set up in Broome to deliver better health outcomes for Aboriginal children in the region (Centurion employees raised money for a specialised 4WD for Telethon Kids Kimberley researchers).
Centurion’s Justin Cardaci said part of the vacation program involved students working together to organise fundraising activities for Telethon Kids.
“This allows them to practice and learn skills vital in a successful workplace such as teamwork, organisation and accountability,” he said.
Head of Development Tim McInnis thanked Centurion for their ongoing support.
“Every donor at any level of giving is essential to the whole of what Telethon Kids Institute undertakes daily,” he said.
“This support enables our researchers to get on with the job of addressing urgent health issues affecting children and their families.”
During January and February, Centurion host a six-week vacation program which offers tertiary students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in their chosen discipline. Over the duration of the program, students assist with projects and tasks within the business and can work alongside company managers. Areas of interest include human resources, health and safety, business law, project management and logistics, and supply chain.
